SECOND STOP----CINQUE TERRE
After two nights and three days in Venice we headed to Vernazza in Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre is the area southwest of Genoa on the northern coast of Italy. It took us two trains, changing in Milano. This took us most of the day.
We arrived in Vernazza around 6:00pm. What a delightful little town! It lies right on the water. This area has been refered to as "The Italian Riviera". The plaza is small and felt so cozy and comfortable. We purchased a bottle of local wine and shared in sitting in the plaza. We also had dinner in a small restorante called the Tratoria del Capitan. After dinner we enjoyed a delicious gelato before bed. Our room in the Franco Maria overlooked the plaza. We all slept well.
The next day we decided to take the 90 minute hike to the next town, Corniglia. It was the steepest hike I ever took. It took us two hours besides. The views were unbelievable. We had lunch in Corniglia, then took the train to Riomaggiore. After seeing that town awhile we took a ferry back to Vernazzza. Lisa and Ron swam in the sea.
We had dinner at a restaurant perched high on the rocky hillside overlooking the ocean. It was beautiful. Lisa went out alone this night hoping to meet some local people her age. And she did. They helped her some with her Italian and she helped them with English.
It was a full and wonderful day.
